Visiting Lahariya Shib Mandir

Lahariya Shib Mandir, also called Lahariya Baba Dham, is the Shiva temple of Lahariya village in Baghmundi block, at the foot of the Ajodhya hills beside the small Lahariya reservoir and below the Lower Dam. Quiet for most of the year, it fills with thousands for its Gajan and Charak fair before Chaitra Sankranti in mid-April, a festival known locally for bringing Hindus and Muslims together.

The temple stands where the road from the plains begins its climb to the Lower Dam, and travellers bound for the hills often stop here first. In front of it lies the reservoir known as Lahariya Dam, and behind it rises the great embankment of the PPSP's Lower Dam.

It is a working village shrine rather than a monument, and its deity is known as Lahariya Baba. Bengali Wikipedia's list of Ajodhya sights calls it an old Shiva temple; no reliable date for its founding has been found. Its priest in 2025, Tapan Mahato, said his forefathers had run the temple's fair before him.

The story of Lahariya Shib Mandir

Thread from Bareria

Each year, on the morning before Chaitra Sankranti, Lahariya's Gajan devotees go to a Muslim family in nearby Bareria village to collect thread, free of charge, from which they make their sacred threads. The family receives a share of the prasad when the four-day worship ends. Kurban Ansari of the family says they have given the thread ever since 'Baba' first appeared here.

A wakeful deity

Bengali Wikipedia describes Lahariya as a 'jagrata' Shiva temple, a word Bengali devotees use for a deity believed to be awake and responsive to prayer.
