Purulia on a Budget: How to Plan an Affordable Trip

Plan a Purulia budget trip: where the money goes, train vs car, sharing rooms and a sightseeing cab, meal packages, free sights and the costs worth checking first.

The Rangamati team

At a glance

  • Local transport is the cost most people underestimate: there is no organised transport to the sights, so budget for a car with a driver.
  • The train is the cheapest way from Kolkata, with three daily direct trains to Purulia; a car only pays off when four or five people share it.
  • Grouping sights by area keeps car hours down: most of the Ajodhya Hills sights lie within about 20 km of the resort.
  • At Rangamati, a Double Bed AC room for four costs ₹3,000 a night (₹750 per person), and the package with all four meals is ₹1,600 per person per day.
  • Many sights have no published entry fee; small costs include the Pakhi Pahar guide fee (₹100 per vehicle in 2023) and parking at some places.

A Purulia budget trip comes down to three habits: take the train rather than drive, share one sightseeing car between as many people as it seats, and plan each day around one cluster of sights so the car is not doubling back. Do that, and two or three nights in the Ajodhya Hills need not cost much. This guide shows where the money goes, where you can save and which costs to check before you travel.

Where does the money go on a Purulia budget trip?

Almost every trip budget splits into five parts:

  • Getting there: the train, a bus or your own car from Kolkata.
  • Station transfer: from Purulia Junction or Barabhum to where you stay.
  • Sightseeing transport: a car with a driver, usually by the day.
  • Stay and food: a room, or a package that includes meals.
  • Small extras: guide fees, parking, tea stops and souvenirs.

The item people underestimate is the sightseeing car. Wikivoyage puts it plainly: there is no organised local transport around the hills. The dams, falls and viewpoints are spread along hill roads, so a hired car is the realistic way to see them, and it is the biggest cost you can control.

How to get to Purulia cheaply: train, bus or car?

The train is usually the cheapest. Direct daily trains run from Howrah and Santragachi. The Purulia district administration lists the Howrah–Chakradharpur Express (18011), the Rupasi Bangla Express (12883) and the Howrah–Purulia Superfast (12827). Sleeper and second-sitting classes cost the least; check current fares on IRCTC. The overnight Chakradharpur Express also saves you a night's accommodation on the way out.

Bookings open 60 days before the journey (since November 2024). For winter weekends and holidays, book when the window opens rather than risk a waitlist.

Buses run from Esplanade (Dharmatala) to Purulia, according to a 2022 Aaj Tak Bangla guide. They can help when trains are full, but you still need transport from Purulia town into the hills.

Driving pays off only for a group. Kolkata to the Ajodhya Hills is roughly 300–330 km each way. Split four or five ways, fuel and tolls are much easier to justify, and you also avoid hiring a car for sightseeing. For a couple, the train is almost always the better deal. See our guides to Kolkata to Purulia by train and Kolkata to Ajodhya Hills by road.

How to save on the sightseeing car

Fill the car. A car is hired per vehicle, not per person, so four people sharing pay a quarter each. Travelling with friends or another family is the single biggest saving.

Group the sights by area. From the resort, the sights fall into two easy clusters:

ClusterPlaces and road km from the resortTime needed
Near Matha and BaghmundiMatha Buru 3, Pakhi Pahar 6.5, Lahariya Dam 9.6, Lahariya Shib Mandir 10, Charida 10A half day
The Ajodhya hill roadLower Dam 11, Turga Falls 11, Bamni Falls 13, Upper Dam 16, Marble Lake 19, Mayur Pahar and Sita Kund 20A full day

Two days of car hire comfortably cover both. Our best places to visit in Purulia guide lists the rest.

Leave out the far places. Joy Chandi Pahar is about 95 km from the resort, Garh Panchkot about 110 km and Baranti about 120 km. Adding them means another full day of car hire. On a tight budget, save them for a separate trip.

Agree the details first. Settle which places, how many hours and the total price before you set off. As a rough reference, a 2022 Aaj Tak Bangla guide put a small four-seater for a three-day trip at ₹7,000–7,500, varying by season. Rates will have changed, so get a current quote. We can arrange a sightseeing cab or driver on request, and you can ask for the cost when you book.

Choose the nearer station. Barabhum, at Balarampur, is roughly 20 km from the resort by road; Purulia Junction is roughly 50 km. A shorter transfer means a smaller bill, so if your train stops at Barabhum, get off there.

What does a stay at Rangamati cost?

These are the rates on our Stay page as of November 2026. Room rates are per room per night, and we confirm the final price when you enquire.

OptionPricePer person
Single Premium Room, 2 people₹1,800 a night₹900
Double Bed AC Room, 3 people₹2,500 a nightabout ₹833
Double Bed AC Room, 4 people₹3,000 a night₹750
Extra bed₹500—
Package: stay plus breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and dinner₹1,600 per person per day₹1,600

Under the package, children under 5 pay for meals only.

Two sample stays

  • Four friends, two nights, room only: one Double Bed AC room at ₹3,000 × 2 nights = ₹6,000, or ₹1,500 each. Food is extra.
  • Four friends, two days, package: ₹1,600 × 4 people × 2 days = ₹12,800, or ₹3,200 each, with all four meals included.

Room-only looks cheaper on paper, but the meals still have to be paid for somewhere, and driving out for every meal adds to the car bill. The package suits groups who want to come back, eat and rest; ask when you book how meals are charged without it. See Dining for what the kitchen serves.

Eating well for less

Local food is inexpensive. In 2022, Aaj Tak Bangla put a roadside breakfast at ₹25–30 and a fish-and-rice lunch at ₹100–120. Wikivoyage notes that village tea stalls are basic and that Baghmundi has more choice.

On sightseeing days, carry water and some snacks. Facilities near Pakhi Pahar are limited, and at some sights there is nothing at all. Take your packaging back with you. Our Purulia food guide covers what to try.

Free and nearly free things to do

Much of what makes the hills worth visiting costs little or nothing:

  • Pakhi Pahar: no entry fee is documented, and the carved birds can be seen from the road. In 2023 the local women's guide service charged ₹100 per vehicle for a walk, however many people were in it. The fee supports their households.
  • The dams: we have found no published entry fee for the Lower or Upper Dam. These are working power-project reservoirs, so follow any rules posted on the day.
  • Charida: watching the mask makers at work costs nothing. In 2019, artisans quoted about ₹20 for the smallest masks and up to ₹5,000 for large dance masks. Buy directly from the makers.
  • Sita Kund and the Ram Mandir on the hill top, and the tower on Mayur Pahar: no fees documented.
  • Sunsets and starry nights: free everywhere, and best away from town lights.

Outside the hills, visitors to Garh Panchkot are charged a parking fee that goes to the panchayat samiti (Bartaman, January 2026).

When to go for better value

  • Travel on weekdays if you can. Weekend trains and rooms are in most demand.
  • Avoid the busiest holidays. The Durga Puja holidays bring crowds to the hills and reservoirs, and winter is the main season. Rooms and cars are easier to find at other times.
  • Weigh up the off-season honestly. Summer is quiet, but April and May are very hot. The monsoon (June to September) is green and uncrowded, but rain can disrupt plans. Our best time to visit Purulia guide helps you choose.

A budget checklist before you book

  1. Train tickets, booked when the 60-day window opens.
  2. The station transfer, ideally from Barabhum if your train stops there.
  3. A room for your group, or the package if you would rather not eat out.
  4. One car for two days of sightseeing, with places and price agreed.
  5. Cash for small guide fees, parking, tea stops and souvenirs.
  6. A small reserve for a missed connection or an extra night.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Purulia a budget-friendly destination?

It can be. The train from Kolkata is inexpensive, many sights have no published entry fee, and simple local meals cost little. The main expense is a car for sightseeing, which is far cheaper per head when a group shares it.

What is the cheapest way to reach Purulia from Kolkata?

The train, in sleeper or second-sitting class. Direct daily trains include the Howrah–Chakradharpur Express (18011), the Rupasi Bangla Express (12883) and the Howrah–Purulia Superfast (12827). Check current fares on IRCTC.

How much does a sightseeing car cost in Purulia?

Rates change with the season and the route, so get a current quote. As a rough reference, a 2022 Aaj Tak Bangla guide put a small four-seater for a three-day trip at ₹7,000–7,500.

Are there entry fees at the Ajodhya Hills sights?

We have not found published entry fees for the dams, Sita Kund, Mayur Pahar or Pakhi Pahar. At Pakhi Pahar the women's guide service charged ₹100 per vehicle in 2023, and some sites outside the hills, such as Garh Panchkot, charge for parking.

Is the meal package worth it?

It is the simplest option when you are staying out of town: ₹1,600 per person per day covers the stay and breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and dinner. Couples or groups who plan to eat out on the road may find a room-only booking cheaper.

Can we use public transport for sightseeing?

Only partly. Buses run between Purulia town and Baghmundi, but there is no organised local transport to the dams, falls and viewpoints, so you will need a hired car for sightseeing.
